Craftmen and Material

Juerī s supplier has a well-established partnership with Vietnamese craftsmen who have the savoir-faire and are constantly improving their capabilities by selecting new craftsmen whose experience complements the skills of existing partners.

Materials

A wide variety of natural materials are used which require patience, precision and refined skills to work with. These attributes are passed down through the families of Vietnamese village craftsmen.

A selection of classic materials in our collections are described below.

Black Buffalo Horn

The horn from the Vietnamese water buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis) is uniformly black. The horns that are used come from the reuse of the horns from domestic animals.

Water Buffalo Hoof

Distinguished by the light and translucent veining that marbles the deep brown of its surface, the buffalo hoof is a luminous material. The natural hoof used is ethically sourced. It comes from the reuse of the hoof from Vietnamese farm-raised water buffaloes.

Stone

Commonly called soapstone, the steatite is largely composed of mineral talc. Predominantly gray, the natural stone is sometimes shaded with blue, pink, copper or white. Once the delicate work of sculpting and polishing is complete, the material reveals its final appearance and silky glow.

Lacquer

The use of lacquer belongs to the oldest and the most emblematic techniques of Asian crafts. Traditionally the raw material of lacquer is the resin produced by the lacquer tree (Rhus succedanea or Cây Son in Vietnamese). The ancestral lacquer required many applications as well as long months of drying, and only allowed a limited production of colors. Today, the artisans use an artificial lacquer.

Brass

Brass is a metal alloy that’s ductile and malleable.  It’s composed mainly of copper and zinc, and is the most widespread copper alloy. The simple production method uses the same minerals as the metallurgists of Antiquity.
